Correlating Off-axis Tension Tests to Shear Modulus of Wood-based Panels

چکیده
The weakness of existing relationships correlating off-axis modulus of elasticity E to shear mod ulus G12 for wood composite panels is demonstrated through presentation of extensive experimental data. A new relationship is proposed that performs better than existing equations found in the literature. This relationship can be manipulated to calculate the shear modulus G12 of orthotropic specimens such as wood-based panels solely from off-axis tension (or compression) tests. The proposed relationship reduces to classical theory for the isotropic case. In all cases tested, the newly proposed relationship is a better fit to the data than the traditional orthotropic elasticity equation.

Experimental and Theoretical Modal Analysis of Full-Sized Wood Composite Panels Supported on Four Nodes
Key elastic properties of full-sized wood composite panels (WCPs) must be accurately determined not only for safety, but also serviceability demands. In this study, the modal parameters of full-sized WCPs supported on four nodes were analyzed for determining the modulus of elasticity (E) in both major and minor axes, as well as the in-plane shear modulus of panels by using a vibration testing m...
متن کاملAluminum-laminated Panels: Physical and Mechanical Properties
Aluminum lamination was performed to improve the physical and mechanical properties of several wood-based composite panels. The panels were aluminum-laminated on two faces in a hot press at 689 kPa and 120 °C for 6 min. Four types of wood-based composites were used as cores, and aluminum 3003 alloy sheets were used for face laminations. Polyurethane adhesive ensured bonding strength between the...
متن کاملProperties of Wood and Wood Based Materials Subjected to Thermal Treatments under Various Conditions
Thermal modification is a well-known process to change the dimensional stability, hygroscopicity, and biological resistance of wood due to chemical modifications of wood cell components. In this study, we reviewed several characteristics of heat-modified solid wood and wood-based panels under various temperatures, durations and pressure. Thermal compressing treatment could affect drying speed, ...

Physical and mechanical properties were evaluated on cross-laminated panels (plywood) fabricated with three plantation species (Cordia alliodora, Gmelina arborea and Vochysia ferruginea) from tropical climates in Costa Rica. The panels were glued with urea-formaldehyde resin modified with nanoclay at four concentrations (0,75; 1,00; 1,50 and 2,00 %) and unmodified resin. It was determined that ...
